One man's view

MANSAG and the GMCPosted by Dr G.T.Igodo Sun, January 17, 2010 13:25:07

The 3 approaches we have adopted so far are as follows:

1. Encourage Nigerian doctors to have a presence at "town hall meetings" with the GMC and make their views known on an individual and corporate basis. This shows that Nigerian doctors are standing up to be counted.

2. Engage the GMC at association level pointing out, without being unnecessarily adversarial ... that there is a need for more representation of ethnic minority doctors in GMC committees, in proportions similar to the population of practising doctors within the UK. In doing this we will need to fight our corner at that level so that any quota for BME doctors does not go to Asians only.

3. Working cordially with other BME groups and associations for co-ordinated BME action at all levels: professional education, meetings, seminars, information sharing about how to help doctors in difficulty, position papers about how Trusts should change their practices regarding dealing with disciplinaries affecting ethnic minority doctors, right of fair hearing etc.

We encourage MANSAG members to engage with the GMC at professional levels etc.
